Independent publisher Melville House recently moved its offices from Hoboken, New Jersey, to the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. The new location includes adequate space for a bookstore, which will open its doors this Saturday, as well as a venue for literary events. Dennis Loy Johnson, who cofounded the press with his wife, Valerie Means, in 2002, told Publishers Weekly last month that the press plans to host readings, panel discussions, and other book events for Melville House authors and other independent presses. "We felt that there was no real hangout for independent publishers, both book publishers and journals," Johnson was quoted as saying. "Brooklyn is just an amazingly vibrant scene and we wanted to be there."

DUMBO is also home to indie presses such as Akashic Books and powerHouse as well as many indie music companies, including Fat Beats and Statra Recordings.

Recent titles from Melville House include Missing Soluch by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, Eeee Eee Eeee and Bed by Tao Lin, and Meyer by Stephen Dixon.
