Author's Bio

My prose and poetry have been published in journals and other periodicals from Canada to Ireland to Australia, including New Letters, West Branch, the New York Times, Humber Literary Review, Craft, Spillway, The Stinging Fly, Scum, Big Fiction, et al. I also write for stage and screen and earned an MFA in film at Columbia University. For fiction and playwriting I've been awarded residence grants at Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Ledig House, and other retreats. I currently live in New York City, where I work as a freelance writer and editor, but spend a lot of time in Richmond, Virginia. Having grown up all over the country (as part of an Air Force family), I have roots in many places, and suspect that my ambulatory upbringing may have contributed to my need to write in varied forms and styles. As a writer, I'm seeking to grow in courage, concentration, clarity, economy--and to dig more deeply and dream more widely. Attending a recent Colrain poetry manuscript preparation conference provided help and inspiration.
