The program offers partial funding; approximately half of all incoming students receive full funding. The program offers graduate teaching assistantships, scholarships, the Writers for Readers internships at the Kansas City Public Library, and other awards.

The program also offers degrees in playwriting and screenwriting, and cohosts the Maya Angelou Book Award and the Cockefair Chair Writer-in-Residence reading series. Students have the opportunity to intern with New Letters, the Fiction/Non/Fiction podcast and local partners including the Kansas City Public Library and Andrews McMeel Publishing.
