The program is a research and studio hybrid program that provides all students with scholarly studies, teaching experience, and pedagogical training, as well as creative writing workshops.

Recent visiting writers include Jericho Brown, Andrew Sean Greer, Mary Ruefle, Robin Coste Lewis, Kevin Brockmeier, Paul Harding, Kim Addonizio, Alice McDermott, Gregory Orr, David Wojahn, and Amy Parker. The program hosts an active reading series, and invites one to two Distinguished Visiting Writers each year to lead one-on-one tutorials for a month.
