Literary Awards

Prizes of $1,000 each are given annually for books of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation published in the previous year by authors residing west of the Mississippi River. The winners will also receive a one-year PEN Center USA membership and two tickets to the Literary Awards Gala, to be held in Beverly Hills, California, in Fall 2017. Translation Fellowships

Grants of $12,500 and $25,000 each are given annually to translators of poetry and prose from any language into English. Applicants must have published, alone or in collaboration, at least 20 pages of translation in digital or print literary publications or in book form between December 1, 2001, and December 6, 2016. Using the online submission system, submit 10 to 15 pages of translation and the original work, a project description, a résumé, justification of retranslation (if applicable), and the résumé of the writer of the original work with proof of eligibility by December 6. Best Translated Book Awards

Best Translated Book Awards

Two awards of $10,000 each are given annually for a poetry collection and a short story collection or novel translated into English for the first time and published in the previous year. The winning author will receive $5,000; the translator or group of translators will receive $5,000. Submit five copies of a translated poetry collection published in 2016 by December 31 or nine copies of a translated book of fiction published in 2016 by November 30. There is no entry fee. A prize of $1,000 is given annually for a poem translated from any language into English. Willis Barnstone will judge. Submit up to 10 translated poems of no more than 200 lines each, along with each original poem, with a $5 entry fee for the first poem and $3 for each additional poem by December 1. Prize in Translation

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Gulf Coast is given in alternating years for a group of poems or a prose excerpt translated from any language into English. The 2016 prize will be given for poetry. Idra Novey will judge. Submit up to 10 pages of poetry translated into English and a copy of the original text with an $18 entry fee, which includes a subscription to Gulf Coast, by August 31. Translation Prizes
A prize of $2,500 and publication of an excerpt in Scandinavian Review is given annually for an English translation of a work of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction written in a Nordic language. In addition, a prize of $2,000 and publication is awarded to a translator whose literary translations have not previously been published. Translations of works by Scandinavian authors born after 1800 that have not been published in English are eligible. Submit up to 25 pages of poetry or 50 pages of prose, one copy of the original work, and a curriculum vitae by June 15. There is no entry fee. Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation

A prize of £3,000 (approximately $4,470) is given annually for a book of poetry or fiction translated from Arabic into English and published for the first time in English during the previous year. Translations of Arabic works of poetry or fiction originally published in 1967 or later are eligible. Publishers may submit five copies of a book published between April 1, 2015, and March 31, 2016, with three copies of the original work by March 31. There is no entry fee. Harold Morton Landon Translation Award

A prize of $1,000 is given annually to a U.S. citizen for a book of poetry translated from any language into English and published in the United States during the previous year. Collaborations by more than two translators and self-published collections are ineligible. Peter Cole will judge. Publishers may submit three copies of books published in 2015 by February 15. A prize of $10,000 is given annually for a book translated from German into English published in the United States during the previous year. The winner also receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the award ceremony in Chicago.
