Journal AGNI

We see literature and the arts as part of a broad, ongoing cultural conversation that every society needs to remain vibrant and alive. We look for the honest voice, the idiosyncratic signature, experimental where necessary but not willfully so. Writing that grows from a vision, a perspective, and a passion will interest us, regardless of structure or approach.

We want something real, something beautiful, something ugly, or something that sings to the far reaches of our being. Make us laugh or make us cry, but we want something visceral. Free verse poems are generally favored over those that rhyme. Experimentation is encouraged.

Journal Artichoke Haircut

Artichoke Haircut was created not to reaffirm the editors pre-existing aesthetic prejudices, just the opposite. We were bored of much of the contemporary literature we had been reading and much of what had been force-fed to us by larger literary publications. We wanted to be surprised and we wanted to publish a magazine that would surprise our readers. For that reason, we strive to publish the best work from around the country by up-and-coming writers who have yet to have their voices heard by a large audience.

Journal The Bacon Review

A monthly review of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and intellectual life, we started The Bacon Review because we care deeply about high-quality literature. We are also aware that the commercial publishing industry is facing difficult times, and consequently, it’s often the case that good writing is not published and authors not promoted. It’s our goal to make excellent work available for free. We also believe that writing should be about more than just publishing. We are interested in our authors as people; we want to know what inspires and motivates our contributors to write.

Journal The Black Herald

The Black Herald is an international bilingual (English-French) literary magazine, based in Paris. Edited by Blandine Longre & Paul Stubbs, the magazine’s aim is to publish original world writers not necessarily linked in any way by ‘theme’ or ‘style’. Writing that we deem can withstand the test of time and resist popularization–the dangers of instant literature for instant consumption. Writing capable of escaping the vacuum of the epoch. Journal Blast Furnace

Our mission is to publish refined poetry by "poets of place," with themes deeply rooted in place. We value refined poetry that is architecturally functional and distinctive on the page. We value poetry that is stripped--burnt down--to its purest state, in both form and context. We value brave poetry that takes risks and, therefore, resonates with a discriminating audience. We value soulful poetry from the core--recited or read aloud--as it was originally intended.

BlazeVOX is a haven for undervalued writers to convene with readers worldwide, delivering the contemporary through books-in-hand and ebooks-in-a-minute. Articles of submission depend on many criteria, but overall items submitted must conform to one ethereal trait, your work must not suck. This put plainly, bad art should be punished; we will not promote it. However, all submissions will be reviewed and the author will receive feedback. We are human too. Please send your work.

Journal Blunderbuss Magazine

We are Blunderbuss Magazine, a web magazine of arts, culture, and politics, an ordnance of fire and improvisation. What ties together these essays, stories, poems, photographs, comics, and other bits of aesthetic shrapnel is a common attitude of visceral humanism. We aim for earnest noise. We want to splash in the mud of lived experience, to battle for a radical empathy, and to provide a megaphone to howling assertions of human subjectivity.

BORDERLINE is the first literary journal of its kind, specializing in the genre of persona poetry. We accept submissions of page and performance poetry pieces, alike, that dare to step outside of their comfort zones and inhabit a whole new world, whether it be that of a character, object, idea, or what have you. Burner is that girl. She's witty, pretty, and doesn't dumb herself down. By day, she's a kindergarten teacher and by night, dances gogo. Inspired by fellow revolutionaries from John Lennon to Virginia Woolf, she's a muse and amusing, compelling and never complacent. The Burner girl gets hot and bothered by the Marquis de Lafayette, aspires to redefine the zeitgeist like Nietzsche, and provokes thought like Margaret Atwood.

Journal Emerge Literary Journal

We are a journal of print poetry and prose dedicated to emerging writers and their words now in our 2nd year of publication. We aim to publish writers who are currently emerging on the literary scene. We recognize how hard it can be to get that first publishing credit and hope to be a foundation for the writers seeking to be published here. We love, prefer free verse and flash fiction–words with passion, voice, and place. We look for succinct images and dialogue that linger, narrative that we can take with us to bed at night, ideas used in magnificent ways. Bring us your castles.

Journal EOAGH: A Journal of the Arts

EOAGH: A Journal of the Arts is concerned with reading as a process, the productive chaos of investigative poetic work. These acts of attention explore the close listening inherent not just in writing but also in being written. Inspired by Whitman's assertion that "Reading is a gymnast's act," we see readings as embodied, interdisciplinary responses that engage with one's environment through ekphrasis, phenomenology, queering, conceptual multiplicity, density and difficulty.

Journal The Fiddleback

We look for writing that pushes the boundaries of language, for writers who would never be clichéd enough to use the phrasing “pushes the boundaries of language.” We believe that strong writers are mindful of the words they hire to represent them and understand that infinitudes can be built or lost within the slippery confines of the sentence. We are tired of stories and poems that don’t play for keeps. We are more inclined toward the outlandish, toward the unsayable, toward the spectacle.

Journal Forge

Without restricting ourselves to a particular genre, media, or theme, we aim to publish interesting, quality works, and every issue has a unique flavour. Each of our two General Editors takes ownership of at least one issue per year, acting as the chief editor (or Uber-editor) for a particular issue, and leaves one issue per year open for a Guest Editor to act as Uber-editor.  This is just one more way in which Forge celebrates the diversity of contributors while exercising our own unique style, issue by issue.

Journal Garbanzo Literary Journal

A bean. The garbanzo bean...found throughout the world in nearly every culture’s cooking, and a staple of the vegan diet...is an amazingly diverse bean capable of being bread flour, one thousand flavors of hummus, is full of protein, can look (depending on one’s perspective) like a heart or a mooning buttocks, and is one of the elder crops of humankind. As such, it is the perfect mascot for a literary magazine.
