Each issue of Ecotone brings together the literary and scientific, the personal and biological, the urban and rural. Much of the writing we publish addresses the idea of place—overlapping habitats both real and aesthetic. Journal El Portal

We want anything about the West. West is a bullet-riddled ‘85 Grand Marquis, a gleaming spaceship over Roswell, a cowboy paying for his latte with an Amex-card, an alien wondering where in the world to get the golden iPhone. West is where it hurts, West is the rattlesnake you didn’t hear, the dust storm sanding your car, the champagne underneath the Hollywood sign, the checkout line of a grocery store that doesn’t carry mandarin-orange segments in fruit juice, green-chile and cheese burritos from the 24-hour gas station. West is when there’s no West left. West is where you always wanted to be.

Journal Electric Literature's Recommended Reading

Recommended Reading, a magazine by Electric Literature, publishes one story a week, each chosen by today’s best authors or editors. Each issue includes an editor’s note written by that week’s partner, introducing you to the work and their mission. In this age of distraction, we’re uncovering writing that’s worth slowing down and spending some time with. And in doing so, we’re giving great writers, literary magazines, and independent presses the recognition (and readership) they deserve.

Journal Emerge Literary Journal

We are a journal of print poetry and prose dedicated to emerging writers and their words now in our 2nd year of publication. We aim to publish writers who are currently emerging on the literary scene. We recognize how hard it can be to get that first publishing credit and hope to be a foundation for the writers seeking to be published here. We love, prefer free verse and flash fiction–words with passion, voice, and place. We look for succinct images and dialogue that linger, narrative that we can take with us to bed at night, ideas used in magnificent ways. Bring us your castles.

Journal EOAGH: A Journal of the Arts

EOAGH: A Journal of the Arts is concerned with reading as a process, the productive chaos of investigative poetic work. These acts of attention explore the close listening inherent not just in writing but also in being written. Inspired by Whitman's assertion that "Reading is a gymnast's act," we see readings as embodied, interdisciplinary responses that engage with one's environment through ekphrasis, phenomenology, queering, conceptual multiplicity, density and difficulty.

Journal The Fiddleback

We look for writing that pushes the boundaries of language, for writers who would never be clichéd enough to use the phrasing “pushes the boundaries of language.” We believe that strong writers are mindful of the words they hire to represent them and understand that infinitudes can be built or lost within the slippery confines of the sentence. We are tired of stories and poems that don’t play for keeps. We are more inclined toward the outlandish, toward the unsayable, toward the spectacle.

Journal Five [Quarterly]

Founded in 2012, Five Quarterly is an online literary project that invites people who love to read to participate in our editorial process. Each quarter, five new guest editors ultimately select five poems and five pieces of fiction for online publication. We hope that this model will help to introduce fresh perspectives, diversify the face of publishing, and encourage an expanding literary community. Issues are published in January, April, July, and October. Our annual e-chapbook contest opens on Mar 1.

Aboard a boat in the middle of Lake Monroe in Sanford, Florida, the three who would become the associate editors discussed the idea of a journal that would showcase work from all over the country, but that would be selected by an editorial board of distinguished scholars from the state of Florida. Our board is comprised of professors from every post-secondary educational level and from different regions in Florida and is charged to evaluate each submission for literary greatness.

Through writing and visual art, Flycatcher strives to explore what it means—or what it might mean—to be native to this earth and its particular places. To that end, we are interested in work that engages the themes of empathy, ecology, and belonging, or that struggles with a lack of the same.

Journal Forge

Without restricting ourselves to a particular genre, media, or theme, we aim to publish interesting, quality works, and every issue has a unique flavour. Each of our two General Editors takes ownership of at least one issue per year, acting as the chief editor (or Uber-editor) for a particular issue, and leaves one issue per year open for a Guest Editor to act as Uber-editor.  This is just one more way in which Forge celebrates the diversity of contributors while exercising our own unique style, issue by issue.

Journal Former People: A Journal of Bangs and Whimpers

We aim to be pluralists in our exploration of things neo-modern. This is not a movement nor is it a pretense to a clear aesthetic criteria as much as a zeitgeist and a de-personalization of the arts. We are like the orphaned children of deposed nobility, walking in the aftermath of their advances and retreats; their hundred visions and revisions.

Journal Found Press Quarterly

Found Press is a digital short-story publisher. Our titles are available for purchase through Kobo, Kindle, and our website. Every three months we release a handful of stories in Found Press Quarterly. Unlike traditional short-writing collections, FPQ features pieces that are produced, promoted, and—most notably—sold as stand-alone works. We strongly feel that short-story writers deserve as much recognition as authors of full-length books, and our unique publishing model gives us the freedom to help our authors reach as broad an audience as possible.

Four Chambers is an independent community literary magazine based in Phoenix, AZ. We don't have an aesthetic. We don't know what we like. We like so many things. We're publishing contemporary literature. We don't know what that means. Isn't everything contemporary literature? That means so many things. We just love writing. We love reading. Our lives would be less meaningful without them. We wouldn't know anybody. We wouldn't do anything. We're a heart: something organic, centralized, & part of a larger body; that connects, supports, & circulates life. We're publishing work to build community.

Journal Garbanzo Literary Journal

A bean. The garbanzo bean...found throughout the world in nearly every culture’s cooking, and a staple of the vegan diet...is an amazingly diverse bean capable of being bread flour, one thousand flavors of hummus, is full of protein, can look (depending on one’s perspective) like a heart or a mooning buttocks, and is one of the elder crops of humankind. As such, it is the perfect mascot for a literary magazine.
