From Poets & Writers, Inc.

POETS & WRITERS IS MORE than a magazine. We are a nonprofit organization that puts money directly into the hands of writers who give readings and lead workshops in museums, prisons, homeless shelters, libraries, and senior centers. Your subscription to Poets & Writers Magazine supports the all-important work of cultivating literary activity in urban and rural communities throughout the United States.

Connect With Poets & Writers Local

Several years ago Poets & Writers undertook a strategic-planning process that included discussions with writers so we could learn more about their needs. Through surveys, focus groups, and interviews we heard from writers from all over the country.

They told us that they valued the information, insight, and inspiration provided by Poets & Writers Magazine and our website, pw.org. They told us that funding provided by our Readings & Workshops program remains vital. What they needed, they said, were more opportunities to connect with other writers, face to face.

We thought carefully about what Poets & Writers could do to respond to this need and came up with several new initiatives. One of them is Poets & Writers Local, an app that will help you connect with other writers in your area, or, when traveling, elsewhere in the country.

Poets & Writers Local provides on-the-go access to our Literary Events Calendar, with listings of readings, discussions, open mics, and more. So if you happen to be at loose ends on a particular evening, you can tap on Poets & Writers Local and find out who is reading nearby. If you are the plan-ahead type, Poets & Writers Local allows you to save event details to your calendar and share them with friends. Other features include listings of Reading Venues and Literary Places, which will help you find independent bookstores, historic sites of literary interest, and more, plus our City Guides, offering bookish perspectives on seventeen U.S. cities.

We’ve created a nifty, streamlined platform—and now we need you to make it fly! Like all the best digital tools, Poets & Writers Local will depend on its community of users to make it truly great. So download the app today. If you participate in readings and other literary events, list them—there is no charge, of course! And make it a habit to get out to readings as often as you can. Supporting your fellow writers, especially emerging ones, is one of the most rewarding parts of being an engaged literary citizen.

The development of Poets & Writers Local was supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. You can download Poets & Writers Local to your Apple or Android smartphone for free by searching in the iTunes or Google Play app stores. For more information, go to pw.org/local.
