The Meeting

This is a workshop for dedicated, experienced writers looking to workshop their pieces (or sections thereof) with other like-minded individuals.

We will aim to meet every two weeks (am for US and pm for UK/EU).  However, I'm open to the idea of submitting written feedback asynchronously too with once-monthly Zoom meetings.

The aim of the group is to provide feedback on submissions (2,500 words max), workshop specific questions the submitting writers may have, share events/tips/readings and hold one another accountable.

Ideally, you have some record of publication or training in literature or writing.

Get in touch with a bit more info about yourself, what you're looking for and writers you admire.

Formal Poets, Mostly

I'm looking to start a poetry group that will critique each other's writing of (mostly) formal poetry.  Regional poetry may also be good.  (I'm a part-time Appalachian poet myself.)  But any region is welcome.  Workshop and publishing experience isn't really necessary.  Fancy writing degrees are okay but not needed.  If interested, email me at cmc2@psu.edu.

RevitalWriters2

RevitalWriters2: Supportive Critique

Welcome to the first spinoff of the original RevitalWriters: Critique. Done. Write.

The Guidelines

  1.  RevitalWriters2: SC, meets every other Monday evening, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, EST/EDT.
  2.          The dates for the rest of 2021 are: 10/18 | 11/1 | 11/15 | 11/29 | 12/13 | 12/27
  3. Our guidelines follow Doug Lipman's The Storytelling Coach:
  4.          The author shares their work for approximately eight minutes (circles around 1,200 to 1,400 words).
  5.  Feedback is then given for approximately another eight minutes. It consists of:
  6.          Appreciations.
  7.          Suggestions, if the author wants any.
  8.                                     All suggestions should be couched to help the author hone their craft.
  9.                                    "Have you thought about...?" or "Consider [adding/deleting/expanding]..."
  10.          Question(s) from the author that they are pondering.
  11. The author, deeply listening to the Appreciations & Suggestions, should only say two words: Thank you.
  12.                                 No dithering. No drawn-out explanations. Short and sweet: Thank you.
  13. All clarifying questions should be left in the chat function or in a private message.
  14. This is a Time Management tool. Everyone should get their chance to share and receive helpful feedback.
  • We have zero-tolerance for abusive language, interrupting/dismissal/belittling of another member, and any other inappropriate behavior. Depending on the severity the consequences range from being asked to leave the room for that session up to parting ways.
  •                        Any conversation along these topics will not be held in that evening's session.
  • The Author is the Author. Period. If the author asks for suggestions, it is just that: a suggestion.
  •                        The author should write them down, look them over at a later time, and use or discard any suggestion offered at their discretion.
  • We are looking for everyone to commit to the schedule and not show up intermittently.
  • Being on time is a must. We will start AT 7:00. Please arrive no later than five minutes before the hour.

Once the room limit is met but you are still interested in joining, send a private message to Stuart Nager that you wish to join our waitlist.

Thanks for your time and patience. I want to be as transparent as the Invisible Man, just not as murderous.

Stuart

Writers Orbit

The Writers Orbit is a group of speculative writers that started as an in-person monthly meeting adjunct to the Orange County Science Fiction Association. After many years, the group came to a natural end.  However, a pair of former members decided they missed the accountability and critique of the group, but not the long drive.  We reformed the Writers Orbit as an online monthly critique group for speculative writing.  Both short stories or novel chapters are welcome as long as they are in genre.

We currently meet via Skype on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30pm Pacific time. We hold our files in a private groups.io channel.  Once a year, we like to hold an in-person meetup at LosCon, which is optional.  While P&W groups are in Beta, we will remain with our current meeting system, but we may move to P&W at a future date.

If you are interested in coming to a meeting to see if our critique group would be a good fit, please contact Wendy Van Camp.

Awful But Cheerful

"Awful but cheerful" is how the poet Elizabeth Bishop characterized the solitary intimacy of writing. I have loved being part of a writer's group, but mine disbanded during the pandemic, and I would like to creative a new group to workshop fiction, creative nonfiction, and memoir. I prefer some publication experience, writing class and workshop experience, and disciplined writing practice, as well as MFAs, GrubStreet & Catapult-type workshops, or writing residencies. My former group rotated sharing work and divided workshop time up for discussion with writer in "the cone of silence" for a portion of the time. However, these are suggestions only; I would like to generate guidelines with new members. As of 11/29/21, we are full.
