Louise Glück Named U.S. Poet Laureate

Louise Glück will be the next U.S. poet laureate, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington recently announced. She will succeed Billy Collins, who served two one-year terms.

Glück, who teaches at Williams College and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the author of nine books of poetry, including The Triumph of Achilles and Vita Nova. In 1993 she won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for The Wild Iris. Sarabande Books will publish Glück's chapbook October in April 2004.

In January Glück succeeded W.S. Merwin as judge of the Yale Series of Younger Poets.

The one-year position of poet laureate includes an office at the Library of Congress and a $35,000 salary.
