Hemingway-Pfeiffer Writer-in-Residence Program

The Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center at Arkansas State University offers a monthlong residency in June to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators in Piggott, Arkansas. The residency includes a loft apartment on the downtown square in Piggott, a $1,000 stipend to help cover food and transportation costs, and the opportunity to write in the studio where Ernest Hemingway worked on A Farewell to Arms in 1928. The writer-in-residence will serve as a mentor for eight to ten writers in a weeklong retreat at the education center.

Vermont Studio Center

May/June 2024

The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) offers two-, three-, and four-week residencies year-round to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the northern Green Mountains. VSC provides time and space to write, as well as readings, craft talks, and one-on-one consultations with invited visiting writers. Residents are provided with a private room, a private or shared bathroom, and access to a shared kitchen and communal spaces.

PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants

Ten grants of $3,000 to $4,000 each are given annually to support the translation of book-length works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that have not previously appeared in English or have appeared only in an “outdated or otherwise flawed translation.” A separate grant of $5,000, called the PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature, is also given to support the translation of a book of fiction or nonfiction from Italian into English. Manuscripts with up to two translators are eligible. Using only the online submission system, submit a translation sample of 8 to 10 pages of poetry or prose, a copy of the same passage in the original language, a biography and bibliography of the translated author, a project statement, and the curriculum vitae of the translator by June 1. Salty Quill Writers’ Retreat for Women

May/June 2024

The Salty Quill Writers’ Retreat for Women offers one-week residencies three times a year to twelve poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators who identify as women at McGee Island, a 110-acre private island located three miles east of Port Clyde, Maine. Residents are provided with lodging at a turn-of-the-century oceanfront summer cottage in single- or shared-occupancy rooms, three chef-prepared meals a day, transportation to and from the island, and the opportunity to participate in after-dinner readings and critiques and to wander trails, kayak, or enjoy a sauna.

Sunlit Residency

Sunlit Residency offers weekly residencies of one to three weeks and monthly residencies of up to three months year-round to poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators at the Sue-Je Lee Gage Residency for Human Rights and Social Justice in Ithaca, New York. The residency provides time and space to write. The faculty includes fiction writer Nick Kowalczyk and translator Annette H. Arteles Creative Center

March/April 2024

The Arteles Creative Center Fall Into Focus Residency Program offers one- or two-month residencies to poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators from September to November in the countryside region of Hämeenkyrö, Finland. Creative writers age 23 and over are eligible. Each resident is provided with a private bedroom and working desk as well as access to shared kitchens, bathrooms, and studio spaces in two residency buildings. The residency also offers access to a range of facilities, including a library, a meditation space, a sauna, and common areas.
