Stony Brook Undergraduate Short Fiction Prize

New Writers Awards

Three prizes are given annually for first books by a poet, a fiction writer, and a creative nonfiction writer. The winners each receive an all-expenses-paid trip to several of the 13 GLCA colleges, each of which pays an honorarium of at least $500 to give readings, meet with students, and lead discussions and classes. Books published in 2023 and 2024 are eligible. Faculty members of the colleges will judge. Publishers may submit four copies of one book in each category by May 25. There is no entry fee. Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellowships

Nine fellowships of $5,000 each, a one-year membership to the Center for Fiction in New York City, and a year of access to the Writers Studio writing space are given annually to fiction writers living in New York City who have not yet published a book of fiction. Winners also have the opportunity to meet with editors and agents who represent new writers and to receive critical feedback on their work. Applicants who on June 1, 2024, will be enrolled in a degree-granting program or are currently under contract with a publisher for a work of fiction are ineligible. Using only the online submission system, submit a short story or novel excerpt of up to 7,500 words and proof of New York City residency during the month of May. There is no entry fee. Pattis Family Foundation Creative Arts Book Award

A prize of $25,000 and a weeklong residency at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, Michigan, will be given annually for a book of fiction or nonfiction published in the previous two years “that inspires, illuminates, or exemplifies the creative process.” The winner will also participate in an event cohosted by the National Writers Series in Traverse City, Michigan, in April 2025. Using only the online submission system, submit a book of any length published in 2022 or 2023 by June 1. There is no entry fee. International Short Story Prize

A second-place prize of a weeklong retreat at Circle of Misse in Missé, France, with an open-ended travel stipend and a third-place prize of €1,000 (approximately $1,090) are also given. Agents & Editors Conference

The Writers’ League of Texas (WLT) 2024 Agents & Editors Conference will be held from June 21 to June 23 at the Hyatt Regency on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas. The conference features presentations, panels, authors in conversation, and a keynote address for fiction and creative nonfiction writers.

Anne LaBastille Memorial Writing Residency

The Adirondack Center for Writing will offer a two-week residency from September 22 to October 6 to six poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers at a lodge on Twitchell Lake in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. Three of the residents will be chosen from the Adirondack region and the other three from anywhere else in the world. Residents are each provided with a private room and bathroom, work space, and meals. There is no cost to attend the residency, but residents are responsible for travel expenses to and from Twitchell Lake.

Salty Quill Writers’ Retreat for Women

The Salty Quill Writers’ Retreat for Women offers one-week residencies three times a year to twelve poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators who identify as women at McGee Island, a 110-acre private island located three miles east of Port Clyde, Maine. Residents are provided with lodging at a turn-of-the-century oceanfront summer cottage in single- or shared-occupancy rooms, three chef-prepared meals a day, transportation to and from the island, and the opportunity to participate in after-dinner readings and critiques and to wander trails, kayak, or enjoy a sauna.

Vermont College of Fine Arts Postgraduate Writers’ Conference

The 29th annual Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA) Postgraduate Writers’ Conference will be held from August 3 to August 9 on the Champlain College campus in Burlington, Vermont.
